Year of the Hierophant 2021

Updated: Feb 22, 2022

2 + 0 + 2 + 1 = 5

The Number of the Hieriophant.

The "fives" in Tarot are not always received with joyful anticipation as they are often associated with overcoming adversities such as poverty, grief, disappointment, and conflict. However, the growth from experiencing the "fives" is significant, allowing us to expand and develop as spiritual human beings.

Known also as The Pope in some Tarot decks, images of this card can be overtly marinated in religious symbolism. From a papal cross to the triple crown to the benediction given by the right hand. These images have caused The Hierophant to be one of the most misunderstood keys in the Tarot. Its meaning is much richer and layered than theological comparisons.

The Hierophant celebrates wisdom, especially that of the spiritual, but it transcends organized religion. In fact, it urges you to question tradition and authority. The ancestors who travelled before us blazed the path we now walk on. Their struggles, triumphs and spiritual convictions live within the very blood and bone of our being.

The essence of "Hierophant" is to reveal that which is sacred. This is a soulful year; meant to connect into the very heart of our spiritual existence. Now is the time to explore and examine your beliefs; reflect, ask yourself if they are in alignment with who you are; who you strive to be. Within is where you will find those answers. Don't just follow what has been handed to you. Question the truth behind it.

This process can either strengthen and deepen your convictions, or you'll find yourself wanting to break away from the pack. If that's the case, forge a new path and start a new tradition.

"The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him

to hold in higher esteem those who think alike

then those who think differently."

- Friedrich Nietzsche

Be your own Hierophant

The Hierophant represents the epitome of learning and the manifestation of that intelligence and insight. He is the student attaining and consuming the knowledge; yet also the teacher, instructing and instilling the lessons.

The Hierophant asks you to dedicate this year to the foundation of personal growth. Build on what The Emperor (2020) has taught you, whatever those lessons may be. You will encounter resistance, but persevere and stay true to yourself.

Last year was an awakening for many. Priorities shifted as the world was collectively rocked. If nothing else, we learned it is time to transcend the "I". The year 2021 is a year of Spiritual Awakening. Not just as individuals, but as a collective. We must relearn and rebuild from the ground up as a community. We are all in this together.

Reflection Questions for 2021

"What have I learned this past year?"

"What is important to me?"

"Moving forward, what do I want in my life?"

"What practices can I integrate to ensure I nurture myself?

"How can I give back to my community"

"In what way am I a mentor to others?"

"How can I honour my spiritual path?"
