The 29.5 day Lunar Cycle always starts with the New Moon. She was bestowed the name 'Moon' as it was the way people on Earth measured the passing of months. Her name originates from two Latin words: metri which means ‘to measure’ and mensis, meaning ‘month’.
The Sun brought the Summer Solstice (in this half of the hemisphere) when he transitioned from Gemini into Cancer on June 20th. The Moon now joins her brother at sixteen degrees Cancer, inspiring the creation of new beginnings, possibilities and transformations.
Each of the twelve signs of the zodiac are categorized in a variety of ways:
Dualities or energies, which can be described as masculine-feminine, or yin-yang. Masculine/yang is outer-directed and action-oriented, whereas feminine/yin are self-contained and receptive. Try to avoid thinking of them as male or female as it has very little to do with hormones.
Triplicities or elements, describe the sign’s basic nature: fire, earth, air, or water, each representing very distinct temperamental tendencies.
Quadruplicities or qualities, refer to the way the sign interacts with the world based on where in a season it falls. Cardinal signs begin each season, so they like to begin or initiate things, fixed signs fall in the middle of the season, so they like to perfect, maintain, and finish things (not necessarily start them), and mutable signs occur as the season transitions into another and therefore tend to be more flexible and malleable.
Polarities or opposites, is the opposing sign in the other half of the zodiac, asserting balancing characteristics.
People born in signs with the same energy, element or quality tend to have similar attributes e.g., people in signs with the element of fire tend to be expressive and passionate.
Note there are two energies, three qualities, four elements, and one polarity. Although there are six signs sharing the same energy, four signs with the same element, and three with the same energy, there are no two signs with all three characteristics in common.
Let's take a closer look at Cancer. If you are a Cancer (or know someone who is), it indicates the position of the Sun on the day you were born. Cancer’s energy is feminine/yin so her forces and actions tend to be indirect. This simply means there is an innate awareness of what is needed to engage and devise a certain outcome, similar to the chubby yellow flower of a zucchini plant opening up for the bees and insects to pollinate. Cancer is the first sign of the summer season and therefore a cardinal sign. They love to start things, but you may hear them complain they have trouble staying the course. Lastly, Cancer is a water sign and prone to heightened sensitivity and emotions. They are feeling-oriented, intuitive, and often romantic. Where Cancer is the sign of the hearth and home, Capricorn, her polarity, is the sign for the public eye.
