Aquarius is one of the oldest constellations in the heavens, dating as far back as Babylonian times. According to Greek Mythology, Aquarius is connected to the lovely Ganymede, son of the Trojan King Tros, who was taken by Zeus to become the cupbearer of the gods on Mt. Olympus.

In the northern hemisphere, our distinctively masculine Aquarius is found smack dab in the middle of winter - the last of the four fixed signs before we cycle back to the beginning with Aries. To demonstrate the stability of fixed energy, think of this time frame and how enduring and relentless winter weather can be (or the heat of summer in the southern hemisphere).

The symbol for Aquarius is the Water Bearer, the most human of the zodiac. Because of this, he is often mistaken for a water sign, but is actually ruled by air. Two wavy lines comprise the Aquarius glyph demonstrating water in motion when powered by wind (air). The water which Aquarius pours out freely and equally to all, represents truth and wisdom. As water is the elixir of life, truth and wisdom is the elixir of Spirit.

“Our society finds truth too strong a medicine to digest undiluted.

In its purest form, truth is not a polite tap on the shoulder.

It is a howling reproach.”

– Ted Koppel, Broadcast Journalist, News Anchor, Activist & Aquarius

This air/water duality is why Aquarius tends to have little regard for the material things in life. He is more concerned with the mind and Spirit, quenching his thirst in the quest for knowledge and as such, tends to live in his head.

“The problem with listening, of course, is that we don’t.

There’s too much noise going on in our heads, so we never hear anything.

The inner conversation simply never stops.

It can be our voice or whatever voices we want to supply,

but it’s a constant racket.

In the same way we don’t see, and in the same way we don’t feel,

we don’t touch, we don’t taste.”

– Phillip Glass, Composer, Pianist, Activist & Aquarius

Characteristically Aquarius is a paradox. He loves to explore the world but is just as happy at home. Though friendly and outgoing, he can be difficult to get to know. His mind lights up when engaged in science, yet easily switches over to the pursuit of art.

"The modern artist is working with space and time

and expressing his feelings rather than illustrating."

– Jackson Pollock, Painter and Aquarius

If you had to choose one word to describe Aquarius, it would be “unique”. Fiercely independent in the way they think, they are unorthodox, original and at times eccentric. Untethered to precedent, they choose not to follow the crowd, but instead dance to the rhythm of their own drum (and drummer).

“Once conform, once do what other people do because they do it,

and a lethargy steals over all the finer nerves and faculties of the Soul.

She becomes all outer show and inward emptiness; dull, callous, and indifferent.”

– Virginia Woolf, Writer, Goddess Superhero & Aquarius

Uranus, the planet of change and disruption, is the ruler to Aquarius. You can see the unconventional "Father of Invention" reflected in Aquarius' progressive innovations. A true visionary, Aquarius is the sign of the future. His foresight reaches far and wide, open to the possibilities of imagination. He thrives best in an environment where he is free to experiment and discover. He is cerebral, with a tendency to be highly educated, his curiosity and inquisitive nature keeping him on the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom.

“I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forego their use.”

– Galileo, Astronomer, Physicist, Engineer & Aquarius

The air element gives Aquarius the edge when it comes to communication. As such he’ll freely dispense his wisdom to whomever approaches him for his insight, which tends to be often. He revels in intellectual sparring, so best not to get into an argument with the clever Aquarius.

"Too bad that all the people who know how to run the country

are busy driving taxicabs and cutting hair."

– George Burns, Comedian, Actor, Singer, Writer & Aquarius

Humanitarians to the core, Aquarius is best known for his strong desire to make the world a better place.

"There's too much darkness in the world.

Everywhere you turn, someone is tryin' to tear someone down in some way;

everywhere you go, there's a feeling of inadequacy,

or a feeling that you're not good enough.

I want to bring a certain light to the world.

– Alicia Keys, Singer-Songwriter, Actor, Activist & Aquarius

His socially-conscious nature makes him the rebel of the zodiac.

"I think the importance of doing activist work

is precisely because it allows you to give back

and to consider yourself not as a single individual

who may have achieved whatever

but to be a part of an ongoing historical movement."

– Angela Davis, Activist, Philosopher, Academic, Scholar, Author & Aquarius

Aquarius rules the Eleventh House of Friendship and Ideals. Consistently amicable, they have a knack for being impartial and objective because they don’t allow emotion to get in the way. He has a gift for dealing with personalities from all walks of life, no matter their age, station, or status. Because he is loyal and trustworthy, Aquarius usually has a large and eclectic friend group.

“You will find true success and happiness if you have only one goal.

There really is only one, and that is this:

To fulfill the highest, most truthful expression of yourself as a human being.

You want to max out your humanity by using your energy to lift yourself up,

your family, and the people around you.”

– Oprah Winfrey, Producer, Actor, Author, Philanthropist & Aquarius

A lifelong student of human behavior, he is liberal and lenient for the idiosyncrasies of mere mortals. You can tell anything to Aquarius, knowing there will be no judgement as he believes everyone has the right to be who they want to be. Fame does not impress or intimidate Aquarius, who considers all life as equal.

“The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.”

– Charles Darwin, Naturalist, Geologist, Biologist, Activist & Aquarius

Although tolerant and patient with the world and humanity, Aquarius can remain personally detached in his more intimate relationships. Despite his friendly nature, he is a loner. Any partner in his life will receive full autonomy, with the expectation that it be returned. He therefore tends to seek out partners who share his values of knowledge, authenticity, and most of all, freedom. They will break away from the relationship if they begin to feel trapped. However, to the right partner, Aquarius will stay devoted and steadfast.

"A relationship is a relationship that has to be earned, not to be compromised for.

And I love relationships; I think they're fantastically wonderful. I think they're great.

I think there's nothing in the world more beautiful than falling in love.

But falling in love for the right reason. Falling in love for the right purpose.

When you fall in love, what is there to compromise about?"

– Eartha Kitt, Singer, Actor, Comedian, Activist & Aquarius

Because Aquarius is so forgiving of the flaws of others, he is sometimes taken aback, angered even, when he gets called out for his own shortcomings, often perceiving it as a personal attack. The fixed quality of Aquarius personifies his inflexibility. At times, it may seem unfathomable as to why he digs his heels onto a particular decision or opinion, but there is no budging him from his point of view. He can be willful, unruly and don’t even bother asking for a compromise because it will be his way, or no way; he’ll go down with the ship to prove it.

“There is a way of being wrong which is also sometimes necessarily right.”

– Edward Abbey, Author, Essayist, Anarchist, Activist & Aquarius

As an Aquarius myself, I can relate and appreciate this original personally, warts and all. Not only is one of my dearest friends in the world Aquarius, I’m also married to one. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
